guys i am fucking crying i got an old copy of pilgrims progress from a used booksale and i just opened it and there’s a handwritten dedication to a girl from her grandfather from christmas 1888 and she put a little fucking drawing in the back and im sitting on my bed losing my fucking mind over a hundred years ago a grandpa gave this book to “miss maggie” and she loved it and it’s lasted a century and im holding it right now
i showed the book to my mom when she came home from a trip and she reminded me that in little women (1868) each of the march sisters got a copy of pilgrim’s progress under their pillow for christmas there is a high, high, HIGH chance that this little girl was a huge fan of little women and talked to her grandfather about it and he got her a classic book just like her 1880s blorbos i am flailing on the ground humanity is so special
One of the most dangerous things in the world is not being able to say no to people because you don’t want to upset them or dissapoint them. This will completely ruin your life in every way possible, at work, in your private life, your sex life and your friendships. It’s a way of removing your own consent in your own decisions and go against your wishes, it is always a crime against yourself. Let yourself have a say. Upsetting people is better than traumatizing yourself.
If the simple act of having boundaries causes you to lose your family and friends then you’ve got shit family and friends who lack any real respect for you.
if you have friends or family that you don’t dare to disobey, then what you actually have is masters. and that is significantly worse than being on your own
Speaking from experience: being alone is WAY better than having to cut off pieces of yourself to keep the peace.
I have, at different points in my life, had friends and family members who I didn’t feel like I could say no to or set boundaries with, because I knew they’d blow up if I did. I was lonely and I figured it was the best I could expect.
It was not.
There is no amount of small and unobtrusive that you can make yourself that will be good enough for people who have decided to view any boundary as a threat or an insult.
It’s also just no way to live.
You can get better friends, but you need to care enough about yourself to refuse to be treated badly.
these are very wise (and very real) words. believe me.
Also, your passion or hobby DOES NOT have to be your career. If they happen to align somehow, cool. If you look at jobs in the field that are unstable, overworked, and constantly on fire and choose stability instead, THAT IS OKAY. Just do the things you love outside of work. WORK DOESN’T HAVE TO BE A DEFINING CHARACTERISTIC IN YOUR LIFE. YOUR JOB IS NOT YOUR IDENTITY.
